MR750: ASSET Artifact or 32 Channel coil?
Hi,

We are performing fMRI on a GE MR750 Discovery.
As you can see we get artifacts when performing DTI and fMRI.
It looks like herringbones or spikes artifacts. But it appears only at the very top slices where there is generally no more brain.
One possible explanation is that ASSET will produce the artifact where there is no signal.
Another explanation would be that some element of the 32 channel coil is going mad.
Has anybody experienced the same artifact?

In almost all cases, MRI images have a slice thickness far greater than their in-plane resolution, making multiplanar reconstruction meaningless. Also, most MRI images have a gap between the slices, which also renders multiplanar meaningless and impossible (unless you're happy with black bars where the slice gaps exist).

You can look at your images and the slice thickness is on the graphics. the slice gap is usually not displayed, but if you look at the slice location displayed on adjacent slices, and compare to the slice thickness, you can easily compute the slice gap.

The in-place resolution is (approx) the field of view divided by the acquisition matrix, both of which are also printed on the image somewhere.

By the way, if you have the dicom (.dcm) files, there is lots of data that's 'hidden' that you can access with a full featured dicom file editor.

Can someone tell me what kind of luck they have had rendering MRIs to 3D. And if there are problems what do you have to do (like no gaps between slices) to get a good quality picture.

T2* is fine to scan the intervertebral discs. T2 is the better choice to show small spinal cord lesions like MS plaques. The echo time of a T2* sequence may be not long enough to give a good differentiation between the pathology and surrounding tissue.rnDifferent 'Multi Echo Data Image Combination' (MEDIC) techniques have been developed to enhance contrast and pathology detection, if available on the scanner this type of sequence is maybe also a good choice, but due to longer scan times and artifact problems it is best for axial slices.rn

Muscle shading in 3T Images
We are using a 3T GE scanner to image axial slices of human thigh muscle for the purpose of quantifying muscle volume. rnrnProblem: Our images have been presenting some shading at the top and bottom of each slice. We have tried everything we can think of to get rid of this shading but have not been sucessful. rnrnI have attached a representative image and would love some feel back. rnrnThanks so much for attempting to help us out.
