Artifact Information
NAME
Phase encoded motion, motion, phase effect
DESCRIPTION
Blurring and ghosting
REASON
Movement of the imaged object
HELP
Compensation techniques, more averages, anti spasmodic, presaturation
This artifact is caused by movements of the patient or organic processes taking place in the body of the patient. The artifact appears as bright noise, repeating densities or ghosting in the phase encoding direction.
mri safety guidance
Image Guidance
There are different solutions for reduction of phase encoded motion artifacts.
Cardiac and respiratory gating, breath holding, sedation of the patient, presaturation pulses for flow artifacts (e.g. arterial pulsation, breathing), fast imaging sequences, etc.

Artifact Information
DESCRIPTION
Static on the image
REASON
Electromagnetic emissions
HELP
Shielding, eliminate the factor of disturbance
RF noise, which often appears as static on the image, can be caused by a medical device located anywhere in the MR procedure room. RF noise is a result of excessive electromagnetic emissions from the device that interference with the proper operation of the MR scanner. The interference is attenuated and aliased in the frequency direction.
mri safety guidance
Image Guidance
In the first case try to eliminate the factor of disturbance, if the problem persists screen the magnet- and room shielding.

Quick Overview
Artifact Information
NAME
Sample imperfection
DESCRIPTION
Shifts of the signal in the phase encoding direction
REASON
Distorting the k-space trajectory, reduced bandwidth
HELP
Fat suppression, more excitations
Artifacts either by distorting the k-space trajectory (i.e. due to imperfect shimming) or as a consequence of the reduced bandwidth in the phase encode direction, commonly with EPI sequences.
While a standard spin warp-based sequence has an infinitely large bandwidth in the phase encode direction (about 1 or 2 kH), the bandwidth in EPI is related to the time between the gradient echoes (about a millisecond).
Hence even small frequency offsets can result in significant shifts of the signal in the phase encoding direction. Segmentation can introduce ghosting if there are significant difference in the amplitude and phase of the signal. This can be a particular problem when trying to acquire the segments in rapid succession.
mri safety guidance
Image Guidance
Suitable choices of excitation schemes and/or subsequent correction can help to reduce this artifact. The signal from fat can easily be offset by a large fraction of the FOV, and must be suppressed. The effect of frequency offsets can be reduced by collecting data with more than one excitation, which effectively increases the bandwidth in the phase encoding direction.

An effect of chemical shift is that of spatial misregistration. Because the frequency displacement caused by chemical shift cannot be differentiated from intended spatial frequency encoding misregistration of the resultant signal may occur along the frequency-encoding direction. This artifact can be seen in a FFE or SE sequence as a bright or dark band at the edge of the anatomy.

See Chemical Shift Artifact.

Quick Overview
Please note that there are different common names for this artifact.
Artifact Information
NAME
Crisscross, Herringbone
DESCRIPTION
Crisscross or herringbone structures throughout the image
REASON
Hardware failure
HELP
Call the service
This artifact appears as a herringbone pattern scattered over the whole image in any direction only on one slice or on multiple slices. The causes of this are many and various, like e.g. electromagnetic spikes created by the gradients, electronic equipment inside the MR procedure room, or fluctuating AC current.
mri safety guidance
Image Guidance
Sometimes it is sufficient to change flickering light bulbs. If the problem increases or keeps on existing, it should be addressed by a service representative.
