Superconducting Magnet

Superconducting magnets are electromagnets that are partially built from superconducting materials and therefore reach much higher magnetic field intensity.
The coil windings of superconducting magnets are made of wires of a type 2 superconductor (mostly used is niobium-titanium - up to 15 Tesla the critical temperature is less then 10 Kelvin). These coils have no resistance when operated at temperatures near absolute zero (-273.15°C, -459°F, 0 K).
Liquid helium (4.2 K) is commonly used as a coolant (sometimes in addition with a second cryogen liquid nitrogen as an intermediate thermal shield to reduce the boil-off rate of liquid helium), which consequently conclude refilling (intervals: liquid helium ~ 3 month, liquid nitrogen ~ 2 weeks). There are cryogen-free superconducting magnets with a closed-cycle refrigerating system at the horizon. Superconducting magnets typically exhibit field strengths of greater than 0.5 T, operate clinically up to 3 T, and have a horizontal field orientation, which makes them prone to missile effects without significant magnetic shielding.

Small particles of ferrite are used as superparamagnetic contrast medium in MR imaging (appearing predominantly dark on MRI). These agents exhibit strong T1 relaxation properties, and due to susceptibility differences to their surroundings also produce a strongly varying local magnetic field, which enhances T2 relaxation to darken the contrast media containing structures.
Superparamagnetic contrast agents are also known by the abbreviation SPIO's (small particle iron oxide or superparamagnetic iron oxide) and USPIO's (ultrasmall particle iron oxide or ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide).
Two types of USPIO will be available on the market as blood pool agents, while SPIO's have been used as darkening contrast agents for liver imaging. As particulate matter they are taken up by the RES. Very small particles of less than 300 nanometers also remain intravascular for a prolonged period of time and thus can serve as blood pool agents.

An RF array coil consisting of several separately resonant elements, any one of which can be selected as the receiver coil at a particular time. Coils not in use are decoupled. Applications of switchable coils include imaging the whole spine without patient repositioning (where the coil elements may collectively be known as a ladder coil), imaging of bilateral structures such as TMJ or orbit using separate coils, or imaging using a coil with selectable field of view.
