(Dy) The Dysprosium chelates are analogs of the extracellular gadolinium chelates, with substitution of the dysprosium ion for the gadolinium ion and offers advantages in application on first pass studies. The use of a dysprosium-based contrast agent (Dy-type) instead of a gadolinium-type (Gd-type) is an alternative in cases of a disrupted blood brain barrier. Because of its much smaller T1 enhancement, this contrast agent should give more accurate perfusion calculations in brain MRI.

Functional Magnetic Resonance ImagingMRI Resource Directory:
 - Functional MRI -

(fMRI) Functional magnetic resonance imaging is a technique used to determine the dynamic brain function, often based on echo planar imaging, but can also be performed by using contrast agents and observing their first pass effects through brain tissue. Functional magnetic resonance imaging allows insights in a dysfunctional brain as well as into the basic workings of the brain.
The in functional brain MRI most frequently used effect to assess brain function is the blood oxygenation level dependent contrast (BOLD) effect, in which differential changes in brain perfusion and their resultant effect on the regional distribution of oxy- to deoxyhaemoglobin are observable because of the different 'intrinsic contrast media' effects of the two haemoglobin forms. Increased brain activity causes an increased demand for oxygen, and the vascular system actually overcompensates for this, increasing the amount of oxygenated haemoglobin. Because deoxygenated haemoglobin attenuates the MR signal, the vascular response leads to a signal increase that is related to the neural activity.
Functional imaging relates body function or thought to specific locations where the neural activity is taking place. The brain is scanned at low resolution but at a fast rate (typically once every 2-3 seconds). Structural MRI together with fMRI provides an anatomical baseline and best spatial resolution.
Interactions can also be seen from the motor cortex to the cerebellum or basal ganglia in the case of a movement disorder such as ataxia. For example: by a finger movement the briefly increase in the blood circulation of the appropriate part of the brain controlling that movement, can be measured.

Imaging coils are radio frequency coils used in magnetic resonance imaging for sending and/or receiving electromagnetic radiation. Several MR imaging coils in different shapes and sizes are necessary for different body parts and to handle individual applications.
For Example:
Birdcage coils provide high homogeneity and good signal to noise ratio (SNR) in brain MRI scans.
Surface coils with small coil diameter and higher SNR enable to image the temporomandibular joints (TMJ).
The implemented body coil allows the scanning of body parts with large field of views.
Micro coils are available to image finger joints.
High performance phased array coils are today state-of-the-art for a wide range of applications from head, spine, knee or shoulder to cardiac MRI.
For different types of coils see Volume Coil, Sense Coil, Array Coil, Surface Coil, and Bird Cage Coil.

MRI Scan

The definition of a scan is to form an image or an electronic representation. The MRI scan uses magnetic resonance principles to produce extremely detailed pictures of the body tissue without the need for X-ray exposure or other damaging forms of radiation.
MRI scans show structures of the different tissues in the body. The tissue that has the least hydrogen atoms (e.g., bones) appears dark, while the tissue with many hydrogen atoms (e.g., fat) looks bright. The MRI pictures of the brain show details and abnormal structures (brain MRI), for example, tumors, multiple sclerosis lesions, bleedings, or brain tissue that has suffered lack of oxygen after a stroke. A cardiac MRI scan demonstrates the heart as well as blood vessels (cardiovascular imaging) and is used to detect heart defects with e.g., changes in the thickness and infarctions of the muscles around the heart. With MRI scans, nearly all kind of body parts can be tested, for example the joints like knee and shoulder, lumbar, thoracic and cervical spine, the pelvis including fetal MRI, and the soft parts of the body such as the liver, kidneys, and spleen. The MRI procedure includes three to nine imaging sequences and may take up to one hour.
