Longitudinal Magnetization

(Mz) The component of the net magnetization vector in the direction of the static magnetic field (z). After RF excitation, this vector returns to its equilibrium value at a rate characterized by the time constant T1.

Longitudinal Relaxation

Return of longitudinal magnetization to its equilibrium value after excitation;; requires exchange of energy between the nuclear spins and the lattice. See also T1 Time.

Longitudinal Relaxation Time

The T1 time constant, which determines the rate at which excited protons return to equilibrium within the lattice. The longitudinal relaxation time is a measure of the time taken for spinning protons to realign with the external magnetic field. The magnetization will grow after excitation from zero to a value of about 63% of its final value in a time of T1.

See also T1 Time.

MSK-Extreme™MRI system is a dedicated high field extremity imaging device, designed to provide orthopedic surgeons and other physicians with detailed diagnostic images of the foot, ankle, knee, hand, wrist and elbow, all with the clinical confidence and advantages derived from high field, whole body MRI units. The light weight (less than 650 kg) of the OrthOne System performs rapid patient studies, is easy to operate, has a patient friendly open environment and can be installed in a practice office or hospital, all at a cost similar to a low field extremity machine.
New features include a more powerful operating system that offers increased scan speed as well as a 160-mm knee coil with higher signal to noise ratio, and the option of a CD burner.

(H) The region surrounding a magnet (or current carrying conductor) is equipped with certain properties like that a small magnet in such a region experiences a torque that tends to align it in a given direction. Magnetic field is a vector quantity; the direction of the field is defined as the direction that the north pole of the small magnet points when in equilibrium.

MRI Safety Guidance
A magnetic field produces a magnetizing force on a body within it. Although the dangers of large magnetic fields are largely hypothetical, this is an area of potential concern for safety limits. Formally, the forces experienced by moving charged particles, current carrying wires, and small magnets in the vicinity of magnet are due to magnetic induction (B), which includes the effect of magnetization, while the magnetic field (H) is defined so as not to include magnetization. However, both B and H are often loosely used to denote magnetic fields.
