With an open configuration MRI system neurosurgical procedures can be performed using image guidance. Open MRI can be used to guide interventional treatments or procedures, such as a biopsy.
Intraoperative MRI allows lesions to be precisely localized and targeted. Constantly updated images, correlated with images obtained pre-operatively, help to eliminate errors that can arise during framed and frameless stereotactic surgery when anatomic structures alter their position due to shifting or displacement of, e.g. brain parenchyma.
Intraoperative MRI can help with the identification of normal structures, such as blood vessels and is helpful in optimizing surgical approaches, achieving complete resection of intracerebral lesions, determining tumor margins and monitoring potential intraoperative complications.

the PoleStar™ N-10 is a compact, mobile MRI scanner that mounts to a standard operating room table. The magnets raise into position for imaging, but lower to make surgery easier, and the low magnetic field makes it possible to use many conventional surgical instruments.
When not in use, the PoleStar™ is stored in a nearby closet that allows the room to be used for conventional surgical procedures. The PoleStar™ N-10 is supplied with a fully integrated image guidance system that utilizes intraoperatively acquired images.
The successor, the new PoleStar™ N20 sets a new standard in intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging.

The mobile intraoperative iMotion system produces real-time images used for MR guided surgery and offers functional magnetic resonance imaging, MR spectroscopy, perfusion imaging, and diffusion weighted imaging capabilities.
The iMotion 1.5 T magnet moves to the patient, gliding in and out of place as needed, without affecting surgical, anesthetic, and nursing management.
