An array coil combines the advantages of smaller coils (high SNR) with those of larger coils (large measurement field). This type of RF coil is composed of separate multiple smaller coils, which can be used individually (switchable coil) or combined.
When used simultaneously, the elements can either be:
•
coupled array coils - electrically coupled to each other through common transmission lines or mutual inductance
•
isolated array coils - electrically isolated from each other with separate transmission lines and receivers and minimum effective mutual inductance, and with the signals from each transmission line processed independently or at different frequencies
•
phased array coils - multiple small coils arranged to efficiently cover a specific anatomic region and obtain high-resolution, high-SNR images of a larger volume. The data from the individual coils is integrated by special software to produce the high-resolution images.

Cartesian Sampling
 
Cartesian sampling is used to refer to data collection with a fixed value of the phase encoding gradient. In 2D Fourier imaging with common Cartesian sampling of k-space sensitivity encoding by means of a receiver array enables to reduce the number of Fourier encoding steps. This is achieved by increasing the distance of sampling positions in k-space while maintaining the maximum k-values.
The Cartesian coordinates are obtained from the polar coordinates by the operations
x = r sin f
y = r cos f
using the trigonometric functions sine and cosine.

A coil designed to excite or detect spins using two orthogonal transmit and/or receive channels. As a transmitter coil, there is a factor of 2 reductions in power required. The receiver coil has a better SNR than a linearly polarized coil.

Data clipping artifacts give images a washed-out, non-uniform appearance. If the receiver gain increase, so that the signal level is larger than the maximum ADC value, the reconstructed image brightness was scaled to compensate this. The overall intensity loss as well as the extensive signal is reconstructed outside of the object. This effect is called 'clipping' because on a plot of signal amplitude vs. time, it looks like the top and bottom of the echo has been 'clipped off' with scissors.
