The range of diagnostics and imaging systems of Siemens Medical Systems covers ultrasound, nuclear medicine, angiography, magnetic resonance, computer tomography and patient monitoring. Siemens is one of the three leading MRI manufacturers, which together account for approximately 80 percent of the MRI machines installed worldwide. Siemens currently offers the Allegra 3T MRI, which is for head scanning only, but the company will also be launching the Trio MRI, a 3T whole body scanner.
Siemens has formed partnerships with more than ten research institutions and private practitioners to define a comprehensive MRI examination and compare MR to currently established cardiovascular modalities, thereby defining optimal diagnosis and treatment.

GE Medical Systems and Amersham announced in April 2004 the completion of a share exchange acquisition of Amersham Health by GE. The result of this acquisition is the new GE Healthcare, based in the UK, totally owned by General Electric (GE).

Amersham Health, was the imaging diagnostics and therapy business of Amersham plc.

The rapid improvements in instrumentation, which have added benefit to the use of extracellular fluid agents such as Omniscan™, have also diminished the market potential for blood pool products such as Clariscan™. As a consequence, Amersham decided to discontinue the development of Clariscan™.

In June 2006 Bayer AG has bought the majority of shares of Schering AG. As a result of this take-over Schering AG has been renamed in December 2006 in Bayer Schering Pharma AG. The Bayer Schering Pharma AG is part of the Bayer HealthCare AG, which represents the pharmaceutical part of the Bayer Group.
Berlex Laboratories (USA) and Berlex Canada Inc., former affiliates of Schering AG, have been integrated into Bayer HealthCare and operate as a specialty pharmaceuticals business that also sells MRI contrast agents, under the name Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, which is a subsidiary of Bayer Schering Pharma AG.

E-Z-EM, Inc. is headquartered in New York and develops, manufactures and markets diagnostic imaging products used by radiologists like the MRI bowel marker Gadolite® Oral Suspension.
In addition to medical diagnostics systems, the company's products include MR-compatible interventional devices, such as biopsy needles. E-Z-EM is also a third-party contract manufacturer of contrast media.
Bracco Diagnostics, Inc. , the US-based subsidiary of Bracco Imaging S.p.A. and part of the Bracco Group, announced in Oct. 2007 that it has entered into a merger agreement to acquire E-Z-EM, Inc. (NASDAQ: EZEM) for a total consideration of about $ 240 million. Upon completion of the procedure and subject to the approval of the regulatory authorities, Bracco Diagnostics Inc. will incorporate E-Z-EM.
