Gastrointestinal (GI) superparamagnetic contrast agents are used in MRI to improve the visualization of e.g., the intestinal tract, the pancreas (see MRCP), etc. Disadvantages are susceptibility artifacts e.g., dependent on delayed imaging or large volumes resulting in artifacts in the colon and distal small bowel loops related to higher concentration of the particles and absorption of the fluid.
Different types of MRI gastrointestinal superparamagnetic contrast agents:
Magnetite albumin microsphere

Usually gastrointestinal superparamagnetic contrast media consist of small iron oxide crystals (ferrites), which produce a signal reduction in the stomach and bowel after oral administration. The T2 shortening caused by these particles is produced from the local magnetic field inhomogeneities associated with the large magnetic moments of superparamagnetic particles. Ferrites are iron oxides of the general formula Fe203.MO, where M is a divalent metal ion and may be mixed with Fe3O4 in different preparations. Ferrites can produce symptoms of nausea after oral administration, as well as flatulence and a transient rise in serum iron. Embedding in inert substances reduce side effects by decreasing the absorption and interaction with body tissues. Combining these contrast materials with polymers such as polyethylene glycol or cellulose, or with sugars such as dextrose, results in improved T1 and/or T2 relaxivity compared with that of the contrast agent alone.

(GE) An echo signal generated from a free induction decay by means of a bipolar switched magnetic gradient. The echo is produced by reversing the direction of a magnetic field gradient or by applying balanced pulses of magnetic field gradient before and after a refocusing RF pulse so as to cancel out the position dependent phase shifts that have accumulated due to the gradient.
In the latter case, the gradient echo is generally adjusted to be coincident with the RF spin echo. When the RF and gradient echoes are not coincident, the time of the gradient echo is denoted echo time (TE) and the difference in time between the echoes is denoted time difference (TD).
Gradient echo does not refocus the effects of main field inhomogeneity and therefore is generally used with a short echo time. Disadvantages of gradient echo imaging are compromised anatomic details and artifacts in regions with varying susceptibility e.g. between the air-containing sinuses and brain and especially between haemorrhages and normal tissue.

Gradient Motion Rephasing
 
(GMR) The application of strategic gradient pulses can compensate the objectionable spin phase effects of flow motion. That means the reducing of flow effects, e.g. gradient moment nulling of the first order of flow. The simplest velocity-compensated pulse sequence is the symmetrical second echo of a spin echo pulse sequence.
Gradient field changes can be configured in such a way that during an echo the magnetization signal vectors for all pixels have zero phase angle independent of velocities, accelerations etc. of the measured tissue. E.g. the adjustment to zero at the time TE of the net moments of the amplitude of the waveform of the magnetic field gradients with time. The zeroth moment is the area under the curve, the first moment is the 'center of gravity' etc. The aim is to minimize the phase shifts acquired by the transverse magnetization of excited nuclei moving along the gradients (including the effect of refocusing RF pulses), particularly for the reduction of image artifacts due to motion.
Also called Flow Compensation (FC), Motion Artifact Suppression Technique (MAST), Flow motion compression (STILL), Gradient Rephasing (GR), Shimadzu Motion Artifact Reduction Technique (SMART).

Gyromagnetic Ratio
 
A constant for any given nucleus that relates the nuclear MR frequency and the strength of the external magnetic field.
Definition: The ratio of the magnetic moment (field strength = T) to the angular momentum (frequency = ν) of a particle.
The gyromagnetic effect happens if a magnetic substance is subjected to a magnetic field. Upon a change in direction of the magnetic field, the magnetization of the substance must change. In order for this to happen, the atoms must change their angular momentum. Since there are no external torques acting on the system, the total angular momentum must remain constant. This mass rotation may be measured. The gyromagnetic ratio is different for each nucleus of different atoms. The value of the gyromagnetic ratio for hydrogen (1H) is 4,258 (Hz/G) (42.58 MHz/T).

Image Resolution
 
The image resolution is the level of detail of an image and a measurement of image quality. Higher resolution means more image detail, for example when two structures 1 mm apart are distinguishable in an image, this picture has a higher resolution than an image where they are not to distinguish.
More data points in an MR image (with same FOV) will decrease the pixel size, but not accurately improve the resolution because the different MRI sequences influence the contrast and the discernment of different tissues. With high contrast and optimal signal to noise ratio, the image resolution is depend on FOV and number of data points of a picture, but T2* effects have an additional influence.
