An ADC map shows parametric images containing the apparent diffusion coefficients of diffusion weighted images. The term apparent refers to the dependence of these coefficients on factors other than prior molecular mobility. Also called diffusion map.

Adiabatic Fast Passage
 
(AFP) Adiabatic fast passage is a NMR technique of producing rotation of the macroscopic magnetization vector by shifting the frequency of RF energy pulses (or the strength of the magnetic field) through resonance (the Larmor frequency) in a time short compared to the relaxation times. Particularly used for inversion of the spins between high and low energy states with an excess of spins in the higher energy level. A continuous wave NMR technique used in e.g., MR spectroscopy.

Adiabatic Radio Frequency Pulses
 
Adiabatic RF pulses are amplitude and frequency modulated pulses that are insensitive to the effects of B1-inhomogeneity and frequency offset (conventional RF pulses used in MRI are only amplitude modulated). Due to an extended application time adiabatic RF pulses are mostly used in NMR imaging applications.

Adverse Reaction
 
Any abnormal reaction of a patient to an examination or procedure, like for example claustrophobia or side effects of MRI contrast agents.
A claustrophobic attack is MRI scanner dependent and more rare with an open MRI. An adverse reaction with magnetic resonance imaging contrast medium is very infrequent. In general, adverse reactions increase with the quantity of contrast media (usual dose of paramagnetic contrast agents is 0.1 mmol/kg) and also with the osmolarity of the compound.
Most frequently encountered adverse reactions are heat sensation, dizziness, nausea, hypotension due to vasodilatation, which can progress to hypotensive shock and anaphylactic reactions.
